Gus Cutty is best known for his aerosol portraits inspired by his background in graffiti and hip-hop culture. Though recognized for his ability to reproduce images on a large scale without the use of grids or projectors, Gus focuses his studio work on the opposite, shrinking his characters using a unique process of meticulous layering to produce small pieces with a level of detail contrary to the nature of the medium. Whether spray-painting on salvaged pieces of demolished buildings or creating delicate acrylic works on canvas, Gus uses his paintings to explore the themes of materialism, idol worship, and impermanence in today’s world.
